Prospective PhD students
We hire approximately one to two PhD students per year. Candidates must have an MSc degree; please note that some joint BSc-MSc degrees do not count. While no candidate is expected to have experience in all the core methods in our lab prior to joining, a capacity and enthusiasm to become proficient in all of these techniques is essential.
In addition to research, PhD students at UZH are responsible for academic and organizational duties, including
- serving as a teaching assistant for introductory chemistry courses,
- participating in group meetings and departmental seminars,
- fulfilling group responsibilities (equipment and organizational responsibilities), and
- completing PhD requirements for the UZH chemistry graduate school program.
Please see the core methods in our lab and Essential profile of competitive candidates below.
Prospective MSc students
We are happy to host interested and motivated MSc students from UZH and beyond!
Prospective MSc students must
- have a background in chemistry, biochemistry, or a related field,
- be able to explain how a protein is made in the cell, and
- be interested in doing protein-based work.
Prospective Postdocs
Ali is largely focused on PhD mentoring and thus does not regularly hire postdocs. However, we do seriously consider postdoc applications.
To be a competitive postdoc candidate, it is recommended that you
- have at least one first-author paper or pre-print,
- have experience in at least four of the core methods in our lab,
- identify at least one fellowship that you could apply for, and
- have an idea of a project that you would like to work on that leverages your prior experience and the experience of our lab.
Please see the core methods in our lab and Essential profile of competitive candidates below.
Other prospective lab members
We have hosted high school students and visiting PhD students before. These opportunties are dependent on lab capacity at a given time. If you are interested, please complete the form at the bottom of this page and indicate “other” for the position. At this time, we are not able to host students for paid internships.
Core methods used in our lab
- Cloning (Gibson, KLD, Golden gate, restriction-ligation, SDM, etc)
- Protein expression (production) and purification,
- Chemical synthesis of small molecules,
- Assay development for enzymatic activity,
- Creation and high-throughput screening of DNA libraries,
- Genetic code expansion,
- Enzyme engineering, and
- Mechanistic and spectroscopic characterization of key enzyme variants.
Specific projects may also require adavanced techniques specific to the research project.
